About Happy Dog: a family business, a factory in Bavaria, and one idea
Happy Dog has been made by the same family in the same Bavarian village since 1970. The idea has not changed: food that a dog digests well, made from ingredients you would recognise, checked by people whose name is on the building.
Who makes it
Happy Dog is a brand of Interquell, a family company from Wehringen, near Augsburg. The Müller family has run a mill on the same river since 1765 and has made animal food since the 1950s. Today the eighth generation works in the business, dry food is still produced in Wehringen, and the company also makes human food and baby food, which is why its pet food goes through the same laboratories. Family-owned, not fund-owned
A lot of pet food is made under contract for brands that own a logo and a marketing budget. Happy Dog is the reverse: the people who own the recipes own the factory, and they have owned it for a very long time. That is why decisions get made slowly and rarely reversed.
What we believe about dog food
Digestibility is the whole game
A food is only as good as what the dog absorbs. High digestibility means smaller, firmer stools, less wind and steadier energy. It is the first thing we formulate for and the first thing you will notice.
Meat first, but the right amount
Dogs need animal protein for its amino acids. They do not need 80% meat, and a bag that says so is mostly telling you about water. In our dry food, animal protein makes up up to 90% of the total protein. Why that number matters more.
Nothing you would not feed yourself
No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. No added sugar. No animal testing, at any stage. Most of the cereals, potatoes and herbs come from farms around Augsburg.
One protein per recipe where it counts
Our single-protein recipes exist for dogs that react to the usual proteins: itchy skin, ear infections, an unsettled stomach. They use meats most dogs have never eaten, ostrich, kangaroo, goat, horse, so an elimination diet has something to work with. If your dog is well on chicken, we would rather you stayed on chicken.
Happy Dog in the UK
Happy Dog UK brings the range to British dogs direct from the factory, with UK-based advice on which recipe fits and a 30-day taste guarantee on every bag. Since October 2023 we have donated over 18,000 kg of food to 64 rescue centres, and the Africa recipe still sends two per cent of every pack sold to SOS Children's Villages, a commitment that has passed two million euros.
