What Inspired Stephen Cordina to Create Aroma and Therapy
Stephen’s initial inspiration came from his native island of Gozo. Born into a farming family he spent much of his youth in the fields where he experienced the scents of indigenous shrubs and herbs. _Regular trips to Valletta with his mother visiting what was then a great citrus market added further fragrances to his memory. Stephen's first "business" was the making of fireworks using collected remnants and failed fireworks after the many festas which take place in Gozo. Using these materials he made his own fireworks and this gave him an early understanding of chemistry. So once his basic education was complete his love of and interest in scents together with this early experience of chemicals led him into further serious studies and his subsequent impressive list of qualifications. He holds Diplomas in Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Clinical medicine. Working in his laboratory in the heart of the Maltese Islands, Stephen follows the ancient traditions of the Punic times on Malta when creating his fragrances, which are further influenced by indigenous Maltese flora and the colourful history of the island.
The Benefits of Aroma and Therapy
As a qualified Aromatherapist it follows that his products should possess therapeutic benefits. But early on in his studies Stephen hit upon the idea that it might be possible to create a candle which could - in addition to making fabulous scent - _also produce melted wax which could be used as a hand and body balm. It took much research and experiment to perfect this concept but he was successful and all the candles he produces today, from the tiny 60gm travel candles up to the very large 10 Litre ones, have this innovative property. Stephen has developed this concept further by developing a range of professional massage candles which contain a much higher concentration of essential oils. While Stephen only uses vegetable wax, many of the scented candles on sale today are made from paraffin wax and use synthetic fragrances. Paraffin wax and chemical fragrant oils can produce vapours potentially damaging to health. Cordina’s candles, on the contrary, produce vapours potentially beneficial to health and wellbeing. The principals established during the creation of his candle range have been continued throughout Stephen's product range - which now includes room diffusers and room and linen sprays. Stephen's hobbies all centre on the sea. He is an accomplished swimmer and spear fisherman. He waterskis, waterboards, and loves deep sea fishing. His love and understanding of the sea also influences some of his fragrances. Stephen's lifestyle makes the owning of a dog impractical at the moment. His favourite breed would be Labrador. However, should he be able to have a dog in the future he would visit the dog rescue centre in Malta where, sadly, there are many to choose from.
